"How was your weekend?" is something I ask all my clients. They generally tell me they had a nice weekend, then after a minute in, they share they worked a little on the weekend either on their professional or personal work.
The goal is always to disconnect at the weekend in order to feel like you´ve had some kind of control over your free time. Yet, there is always something left undone either professional or personal which get tossed by the wayside. It´s time to get more done during the week so you can really get that well deserved R&R on Saturday and Sunday.
There are a few things I recommend in order to start doing more and getting much more accomplished and start enjoying the weekends by truly disconnecting or doing something fun and it all starts with a little planning:
1. Plan Daily and Consistently
Don´t veer from your daily planning schedule. As you know, You must plan the night before or set aside time the next morning to outline your day. So, pick the one that fits with how your brain works and stick to it! It must be done daily, it must be done consistently. Don´t be one of those people that´ll do it for a week then begin to see progress and then lets up. DO NOT STOP once you start seeing progress. That´s exactly when you´ll really see gains. You´ll see that your schedule opens up enough to touch your personal goals during the week instead of on the weekends with all the extra free time. You´ll thank yourself for it.
2. Leave the office on Friday with Monday already planned.
Yes, you can do this. You can make time to prioritize your Monday on Friday evening! This will allow for you to actually take everything you have on your mind about next week´s "to do´s" and leave it written down, so you can enjoy your weekend to the maximum! The moment you close your agenda, you can honestly say to yourself, “Weekend, I´m ready for you.” Try it and see how it worked for you.
3. This one might challenge the very core of your being: wake up earlier to get more done! The reverse might be better for you: stay up later. Depending on the type of person you are, pick the one that suits you best. This works extremely well if you live in a home with more than one room. You can go the quiet room or your favorite room of your home and get your day started. You´ll see how much more you can accomplish when you start using your entire day.
So, what´s holding you back from truly disconnecting at the weekend? What have you tried recently that has worked for you? What have been doing to get more done during the week? Let us know. We´d love to hear about the tricks up your sleeve.
